How a Cumbrian Heritage Attraction Got Reliable Website Support After Years of Frustration

A major heritage site needed a developer who could actually respond when things broke. Two years later, the site’s still standing—through TV features, traffic spikes, and daily operations.

About the Project

Client: Lowther Castle & Gardens
Location: Cumbria
Industry: Heritage attraction and visitor destination
Project type: Website hosting, maintenance, and infrastructure takeover
Timeline: Ongoing since 2023
Lowther Castle & Gardens is a major heritage attraction in Cumbria, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors annually. The restored castle and gardens attract families, history enthusiasts, and event-goers year-round—and when they’re featured on UK television, traffic spikes hard.

The Challenge

  • A Developer Who Couldn't Keep Up

Lowther Castle contacted Mitchell Digital in 2023 with a familiar problem: their previous developer was taking too long to get anything done. For a high-traffic heritage site, that’s not acceptable.

  • The Breaking Point

When you’re running a visitor attraction that appears on national television, you can’t afford to wait weeks for critical updates. The previous setup was:

    • Slow to respond to issues
    • Taking too long for simple changes
    • Running on infrastructure that couldn’t handle traffic spikes
    • Frustrating the team who needed things done quickly
  • The Risk

Heritage attractions don’t operate on “we’ll fix it when we can” schedules. Opening times change. Events need promoting. Bookings need processing. And when you’re featured on TV, your website needs to handle the spike—or you lose enquiries.

The Solution

  • Infrastructure First, Speed Second

This was one of the few projects where Mitchell Digital took over an existing site without rebuilding it. The priority was stability and responsiveness, not cosmetic changes.

    Dedicated VPS Server

The site was migrated to its own Virtual Private Server. This meant:

    • No shared hosting vulnerabilities
    • Resources dedicated entirely to Lowther Castle
    • Ability to handle traffic spikes when featured on UK television
    • Isolation from other sites that could slow things down
  • Security Audit and Performance Cleanup

A full security review was conducted during migration. Bloated scripts were removed where possible (limited by the older WordPress page builder in use). Load times improved significantly, though the site’s extensive image galleries and sliders still create some constraints.

  • Responsive Support

The biggest change wasn’t technical—it was turnaround time. Issues that previously took weeks now get fixed quickly. Updates happen when they’re needed, not when someone eventually gets around to them.

The Results

Two Years of Stability

The proof is in the uptime and response times, not flashy redesigns.

Handles Real-World Traffic

The site has been featured on UK television multiple times since the takeover. Each appearance drives a spike in traffic. The VPS infrastructure has handled every single one without crashing or slowing to a crawl.

Quick Response Times

Issues get fixed quickly instead of sitting in a queue for weeks. When something needs updating, it happens. For a busy heritage attraction managing events, bookings, and visitor information, that responsiveness matters.

Long-Term Reliability

Two years on, the site is still running smoothly. No major outages. No disaster recovery situations. Just consistent, reliable service for a high-traffic public attraction.
